Frequently Asked Questions
Q:What indications would suggest a Thermo-Splint?
A: All splint applications for TMJ or Bruxism associated problems, or opening of the vertical dimension.
Q: What contra-indications should I look for?
A: Thermo-Splint Classic is contra-indicated for heavy bruxers. Thermo-Splint Hard Face or Thermo-Splint Custom Fit would be recommended for such cases.
Q: What is the life span of a Thermo-Splint?
A: A Thermo-Splint (or any splint) is made of material that is softer than tooth enamel. It is designed to take damage from, and not cause damage to, the wearer’s teeth. A Thermo-Splint is meant to be sacrificed in order to safeguard the teeth of the wearer. The lifetime will vary greatly depending upon the severity of the bruxing problem. It could range from a few months to well over a year. In the case of an extreme bruxer, the shorter the lifespan, the greater the need and benefit! NOTE: Do not abuse the Thermo-Splint. It will break if flexed too far.
Q: How thick are Thermo-Splints?
A: The bite is opened until we clear the cusp interferences. We then open the bite approximately 1mm beyond that, giving an average thickness of 4 to 5mm.
Q: Can Thermo-Splints be uppers or lowers?
A: Most commonly splints are made for the upper arch, but can be made for lowers upon request.
